The Fallen Drakes are one of IrelandÂs most promising new bands.
The group took its form after Musician Brothers Nabz and Hyder Ali were travelling the USA in the summer of 2009, where they met Brian McGovern, an Irish Singer Songwriter that was looking to play with likeminded musicians. They made plans to start a band on their return to Ireland.
With a handful of songs written, the newly formed group began playing the tracks to friends and quickly started a buzz. They needed a lead guitar player to complete the line up and their call was answered by Michal Bartolen; a Slovakian native that was in Ireland, looking to join a new band.
The group began penning songs for an upcoming E.P. whilst playing live shows and perfecting their sound.
In January 2011, The Fallen Drakes gained overwhelming media attention when they released their debut E.P. ÂDeath of an ActressÂ, with celebrated producer Ger McDonnell (U2 and Kasabian) handling production duties.
This well-deserved recognition has led to The Fallen Drakes playing a number of Sold Out shows in Dublin and Cork, as well as receiving an invitation to play showcases in London by the UK Discovering Arts Music Group.
The Fallen Drakes undeniable current pop/rock arena sound has already generated a huge media buzz in Ireland and in the UK; with top UK Industry Bloggers short-listing the band out of tens of thousands of others for a chance to play the Main Stage at Glastonbury 2011. The Fallen Drakes were one of only three Irish bands to make this short-list.
IrelandÂs leading music magazine ÂHotpress has featured The Fallen Drakes heavily, comparing them to the hugely successful Irish band The Script. The band has also been widely acclaimed in other popular culture reads such as ÂU Magazine and ÂThe Sunday WorldÂ, which both attribute The Fallen Drakes as being the ÂNext Big ThingÂ.
The Fallen Drakes made history in March 2011 by becoming one of IrelandÂs first unsigned bands to play DublinÂs O2 Arena in front of 13,000 people when they supported The Commitments on their sell-out reunion show. The Fallen Drakes overcame tough competition from 430 bands from across Ireland and netted approximately 13,000 votes from the public in a competition hosted by Tony Fenton on Today FM.
On Thursday 19 May 2011, the Dublin-based quartet solidified their status as one of IrelandÂs top up-and-coming bands when they won another unsigned band competition judged by Peter Aiken (Aiken Promotions), Carol Dooley (Radio Nova) & Mark Crossingham (Universal Records). This electric night at Vicar Street saw The Fallen Drakes triumph yet again and win the much-coveted prize of the competition; playing support to Bon Jovi before 35,000 people in DublinÂs RDS Arena on 30 June 2011.
With a constantly growing fan base following The Fallen Drakes on Facebook and with their debut single; ÂGirl From New York release date set for 15 July 2011, the band will aim to replicate and amplify the success they have experienced in the first half of 2011 with more shows, more festivals, more releases Keep your eyes peeled!
How did the name come about?
After rehearsals one night, we were watching Talladega Nights, and in the movie Ricky Bobby and his team mate Cal do the 'Shake and bake' fist bump! Our Guitarist Mickey thought they were saying 'Fallen Drake'.... yet again the rest is history But also, we recently found out that The Fallen Drakes directly translated into Slovakian is 'We love Alternative Irish Music Review"'.
